As Enel Distribución Perú considers innovation an essential quality to improve people’s quality of life, it decided to become the country’s first distributor company to install LED street lights, being La Punta the first district to have this technology and San Miguel the first to have a remote management system.
The main benefits of using LED lights are: more efficient lighting performance, (long-term durability and less maintenance), less energy consumption (reducing consumption by 40%) and high-quality lights (the emitting white light offers a better colour reproduction). This type of lighting helps us be not only more efficient but also comply with our Sustainable Development Goals for the care of the environment.
More than 60% of La Punta already has LED street lighting
La Punta, Callao, has officially become the first district in Peru to have LED street lighting in most of its streets, after Enel Distribución Perú completed the second installation stage of this technology in its concession area, within the framework of an agreement with the district council.
“Now that the works are completed, 63% of the district is lit up with LED lightning. This technology uses up to 30% less energy, therefore it has a reduced impact on the environment. In addition, its greater brightness helps the recording of community safety cameras, while it works as a more efficient deterrent against crime”, said Riccardo Lama , Head of Infrastructure and Networks at Enel Distribución Perú .
LED lighting also guarantees greater durability given that its life cycle is twice as long as that of the traditional sodium lamp. What is more, this technology can be integrated into a remote street lighting management system, which could be implemented in further stages of the project.
The first stage of construction was completed in January 2017, thanks to which the two main avenues of the district (Miguel Grau and Francisco Bolognesi) were lit up. The second stage included the main square of La Punta, the José Gálvez Park, the Tarapaca and Comandante Juan Fanning streets, and some other streets crossing the main avenues.
Smart street lighting now in San Miguel
Following our commitment to providing more people with energy, we modernised part of the street lighting system in the district of San Miguel by replacing sodium street lights with LED technology and incorporating a smart remote management system that monitors the operation, turns on and off lights, and even regulates the intensity of street lighting remotely.
Enel Distribución Perú has installed more than 400 smart street lights in the Precursores and Parque de Las Leyendas Avenues. This project, in addition to the initiatives to incorporate new technologies that we will propose to the regulatory body in accordance with the regulation in force, are part of our work to turn Lima into a smart city .
Roberto Sánchez, Head of Network Design and Manager of Technology and Innovation at Enel Distribución Perú , stressed that “this pilot program responds to Enel’s conviction that, in the future, the public lighting system will be LED and managed remotely”. He also indicated that the pilot project in San Miguel will evaluate, correct and improve the technical, operational and lighting parameters of this technology to the environmental particularities of Lima. On the other hand, the information gathered in the field will make it possible to prepare a proposal that allows the mass change of sodium street lights with remotely managed LED street lights.
With this pilot project, Enel Peru takes an important step in its goal of helping turn our cities into spaces where technology improves people’s quality of life.
