Enel Distribución: approval of Congress Bill N° 2320 would raise wholesale market electricity prices in 170%

  • This Bill has been given an unfavorable opinion by the sectoral authorities and the National Society of Industries.

Lima, June 17, 2019. – The electrical distribution company Enel Distribución Peru, warned service users and authorities that if Bill N° 2320 is approved, which is currently under debate in the Congress, wholesale electricity market prices will rise immediately in approximately 170%, without any technical basis.

The company explained that this huge increase in the wholesale market will inevitably impact the final prices paid by consumers. Proof of this is that this Bill has been given an unfavorable opinion by the competent sectorial authorities and the National Society of Industries, among others.

Enel Distribución reminded its customers that the price of electricity represents 45% of their power bills, and this is defined by the tenders made with power generation companies. Therefore, a structural change in rules such as this one will increase the base price of the wholesale market. The price of electricity that distributors will buy in upcoming tenders will also increase, in line with the current regulations, which have been in force for almost 20 years.

New tenders of Enel Distribución will take place in 2020

The company remarked that it is false that all distributors have covered the power demand until the year 2027. According to the projections that Enel Distribución has presented to the relevant institutions, the evolution of demand will force them to carry out new tenders in the year 2020 to satisfy the market needs starting on the year 2023.

"If this Bill were passed, households would be prevented from benefiting from the clear downward trend in electricity prices that could be obtained in the upcoming tenders, considering the current regulation," said Simone Botton, Manager of Enel Distribución Peru. "We are bringing this information to the attention of our clients so that they will not be startled by it. From our part, we will keep everyone informed on any aspect related to electricity rates which could affect them. ", he added.

Enel Distribución Perú is a power company of the Enel Group, an Italian company with presence in more than 34 countries. It has 1.4 million clients in Northern Lima, Central Lima and the Near North Coast of Lima.
