  • New technological innovation project will store large amounts of energy to provide Primary Frequency Regulation.
  • The project represents an investment estimated at USD 9 million and will be ready by the second half of 2019.

Lima, December 6th, 2018. - Enel Generación Perú announced the installation of the Battery Energy Storage System - BESS Ventanilla, the first high-capacity lithium-ion battery in the country. It is a device with a capacity of 14 megawatts (MW) that will be incorporated into the Ventanilla thermal plant, thanks to an investment of USD 9 million. The civil works are expected to be executed, together with the processing of the final licenses, during the first half of 2019, for the new system to start operation by the second half of the year.

Batteries are one of the technological developments that are driving the global electric market as they can store large amounts of energy. This feature is especially important to support the Supplementary Services of the electrical system and the stability of the power grid in the wind and solar generation growth management. These pieces of equipment are also deemed to be the future of clean power generation.

This technology to be installed in the country is the only of its kind and the first of Enel in Latin America. It can be activated and improve in seconds the Primary Frequency Regulation of the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN), which is key to improve the quality of the energy supplied to customers.

“We are satisfied to implement this pioneering project in Peru and in Latin America. The development of the first large-scale storage system in the country allows us to explore several usages for this technology, such as frequency regulation, peak shaving, energy shifting and investment optimizations in the transmission network, always looking to strengthen our relations with customers. With the installation of the BESS Ventanilla, we are improving the reliability of electricity supply to mining companies, large industries and all our customers. Finally, with the installation of the BESS, we ratify our commitment to develop innovative and sustainable projects,” said Marco Raco, Responsible for Thermal Generation in Enel Perú.

The BESS Ventanilla project has the approved Pre-Operating Study of the National Interconnected System Economic Operation Committee (COES), as well as a Supporting Technical Report prepared by SENACE of the Ministry of the Environment.
