Enel Begins Construction of Innovative Photovoltaic Park at La Silla Observatory, Chile

Lima, 16 April 2016 – Enel Green Power (EGP) is currently investing about 3.4 million dollars in building a 1.7 MW plant.

Enel has begun the construction of the innovative 1.7 MW La Silla photovoltaic plant in northern Chile, named after the neighbouring astronomical observatory it will supply with its clean energy. Both places are located in La Higuera, in the Chilean region of Coquimbo that is on the outskirts of the Atacama Desert.

EGP will invest approximately 3.4 million US dollars to build La Silla, which is expected to be completed by the first half of this year.

Technology Optimising Operations

La Silla will use state-of-the-art panels, including innovative bifacial and smart modules. The smart module has a microchip that optimises production from each panel by allowing the transmission of electricity to the grid regardless of any possible malfunctioning affecting other panels. The bifacial module captures solar energy from both sides of the PV panel, unlike traditional modules that capture energy from only one side.

Once fully operational, the plant will be able to produce approximately 4.75 GWh a year—equivalent to the energy needs of almost 2,000 households and more than 50% of the annual consumption needs of the observatory—, while avoiding the annual emission of over 2,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
