Lima, September 7, 2017. Important damages to energy distribution structures in Northern Lima are still going on. In different areas of Hualmay and Végueta, located in the province of Huaura, high voltage power poles of Enel Distribución Perú have been damaged, which has resulted in thousands of households, businesses and industries being left without power and public lighting.

So far this year, the company has reported four incidents of this kind, which have affected more than 54 thousand people who were left without power mainly in Huacho and Supe, as well as in the districts of Hualmay, Santa María, Huaura, Végueta, Barranca and Pativilca.

In the attacks, cables were cut and stolen, and light poles bases were burned and cut. These events haven been happening for many years and are mainly directed to high voltage power poles (66 thousand volts) that go across many farms and croplands.

The last incident occurred on August 20; a power pole was burned in the district of Végueta. Enel Distribución Perú has reported the event to the police and has contacted the councillors of the districts involved in order to receive more support for the security of such structures. “These situations are not only prejudicial for the company and the electricity users, they also represent a risk for the safety of people, animals and properties near the damaged power poles”, stated Paul García, Head of High-Voltage Maintenance of Enel Distribución Perú. “For that reason, we request the support of authorities to guard the structures, and we ask residents and witnesses to report this kind of acts to authorities”.

As part of the prevention measures, Enel Distribución Perú conducts inspections on a regular basis. In addition, a concrete layer of protection covering the wooden pole bases was implemented to prevent the infrastructure from being damaged by these attacks. The company has also placed prevention signs in rural areas where brushwood is usually burned, warning about the risk of burning the power poles nearby.

Suspicious behaviours are to be reported calling Enel Distribución Perú’s customer service at 5171717.
