Enel Puts into Operation Pampa Norte Photovoltaic Power Station in Chile

Lima, 6 April 2016 – With a total installed capacity of 79 MW, Pampa Norte can produce more than 200 GWh a year.

Enel, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power Chile Ltda. (EGPC), has completed and connected to the grid the new Pampa Norte photovoltaic power station, located 32 km southeast of Taltal, in the Chilean region of Antofagasta.

The new photovoltaic plant has a total installed capacity of 79 MW and can produce more than 200 GWh a year—equivalent to the annual consumption needs of some 100 thousand Chilean households—, while avoiding the annual emission of over 100 thousand tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Powerful Green Investment

Enel invested about 150 million US dollars in the construction of the new plant, which is supported by a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The energy produced in Pampa Norte comes from around 258 thousand polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic panels installed over about 290 hectares and will be connected to the grid through Chile’s Central Region Transmission Network (SIC).

In Chile, Enel operates a portfolio of plants with a combined installed capacity of almost 700 MW, of which 340 MW come from wind power, 253 MW from photovoltaic power and 92 MW from hydropower. EGPC has other projects in progress, such as Cerro Pabellón, that will have a gross power output of 48 MW and will be the first geothermal plant in South America.
