  • Enel's Green Certificate is the first in the country to recognize the consumption of equivalent active energy from renewable sources.
  • Six certificates were issued in 2019, twenty in 2020, and more than thirty are expected to be issued in 2021.

Lima, July 1st, 2021. In order to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the country, Enel Perú issued a Green Certificate for SIDERPERU, which recognizes that this Peruvian company now supplies itself and operates with equivalent energy from renewable sources.

Now, the steelmaker consumes 259,000 MWh per year of electrical energy from renewable sources, thus avoiding the emission of 120,000 tons of CO2. SIDERPERU uses this clean energy in the production process of its plant located in Chimbote, where more than 900 workers currently work and 750 thousand tons of liquid steel are produced per year.

The energy delivered through the Green Certificate comes from Enel Perú's Huinco, Callahuanca, Moyopampa, Huampaní, Yanango, and Chimai hydroelectric plants.

The Green Certificate is one of the initiatives developed by Enel Perú to promote the country's energy transition: “At Enel Perú, we work to transition towards a sustainable economy based on technologies with low carbon emissions. In this sense, the Green Certificate is a tool to involve the different productive sectors of the country in the energy transition process that will benefit Peruvian society as a whole”, commented Marco Fragale, Country Manager of Enel Perú.

“At SIDERPERU, one of our principles is optimizing the use of natural resources and minimizing their impact on the environment. Therefore, we strive to make our processes energy efficient and use carbon sources with lower potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, all through economically viable and innovative solutions. This helps us meet the goals defined by the organization. The Green Certificate is part of our company's activities for sustainable development, aligned with our Corporate Sustainability Policy”, Said Richard Cervantes, Industrial Manager at SIDERPERU.

Electricity generation, through renewable sources, is aligned with the Enel Group's strategy to decarbonize its electricity production worldwide, as well as with the commitment assumed by the company with Sustainable Development Goal No. 13, "Climate Action", of the United Nations.
