  • A replicability report will be given to the Peruvian government in order to guide it in implementing large-scale electrification initiatives.

Lima, December 12, 2019. The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) and member companies Enel X and Hydro-Québec have inaugurated the first electric bus in Lima with the collaboration of Protransporte and the Peruvian Ministries of Energy and Mines, Transport and Communications, and Environment. Transportation electrification can play an important role in meeting Peru’s commitment to reduce the country’s carbon footprint by 30% before 2030.

"Electrification will be a key driver of the energy transition. The pace of electrification in the sectors of transportation, buildings and industry worldwide, needs to double as compared with recent trends if we want to achieve global climate goals," said Martine Provost, Executive Director of GSEP.

The 80-passenger electric bus will be operated by Allin Group, one of Protransporte’s local operators, on the Corredor Rojo line (Faucett–La Marina–Javier Prado), one of the busiest arteries in Lima. For the next two years, the three partners will support the maintenance of the charging infrastructure which has been specifically designed and built for the operation of this bus with consideration of the country and city’s requirements.

“This bus is the first step for the Peruvian public transport transformation. We are sure that before than expected we will be able to follow the path of Chile or Colombia, where Enel has already put entire fleets of electric buses into service for the people. We will continue pushing this technology in the country, articulating initiatives and contributing through our worldwide experience in the installation and management of charging stations”, said José Manuel Revuelta, Country Manager of Enel Peru.

During operation, real-time data on speed, battery performance, operations, costs and environmental impact will be collected. The data from the first year will be analyzed and compiled into a replicability report for the Peruvian government to guide it in implementing large-scale electrification across the country’s public transit systems.

"We have significant expertise in electric charging networks as well as electric motors and batteries, and are happy to share our knowledge on transport electrification to support Peru’s goal of implementing large-scale electrification throughout the country," said Jean-Pierre Giroux, Director – International Business Development, Hydro-Québec International.

Not only will the switch to electric mobility reduce carbon and pollutant emissions, it will also have economic and social benefits. The replicability report will confirm the savings generated by the significantly lower costs for lifetime maintenance of electric buses compared to those of regular diesel or natural gas buses. The electric bus will also contribute to reducing noise pollution and will be equipped with USB chargers, Wi-Fi, security cameras, and air conditioning.
